BOAN1942 | Heemin Son SOLO EXHIBITION《HMS Challenger》
While working on a sculpture about chitin, a substance that makes up the shells of crustaceans and the cell walls of fungi, Son became aware of the presence of marine microscopic animals. Looking through the lens at the specimen on the pedestal, a whole new world emerged. "The exact species name can only be determined under a microscope." The biologist's notes are simple but thought-provoking, and the experience of collecting and observing creatures with him was the starting point for this project.
"HMS Challenger" (2023) borrows its name from the HMS Challenger exploration ship, which laid the foundations of oceanography. Starting with modern marine microfauna and working backwards towards the paleontology of the primordial ocean, the artist encounters moments of sculpture at the boundary between fact and speculation, restoration and creation. Working from fictionalized specimens, the twenty creature sculptures hover between scientific knowledge and the aesthetic procedures of art, addressing the artist's longstanding questions surrounding the category of life.
