CONTENTS
BOAN1942 | Unmake Lab Solo Show《Popular Creatures》
<Popular Creatures> is an exhibition that interweaves the disaster site of the "burnt mountain" with the predictability of artificial intelligence, treating it as a machine fable.
The video, Ecology for a Non-Future, which forms the basis of the exhibition, presents the present in the tense of "non-future," where disaster and advances in predictive technology overlap. Traversing the many paths revealed by the burned mountains, the artists weave the stories of endangered species, generative artificial intelligence and datasets, animal portraits called trailcams, and taxidermied animals through fable, documentary, and machine learning experiments.
The artists feed back the results of machine vision's Pareidolia-like perception analyzed in their previous work Ecosystem, 2020 as prompts to the current mega-generative artificial intelligence, which outputs them as summer romantic poems, continuing the ironic joke: "This summer will be fun." Computer vision, which recognizes objects based on their outlines, patterns, and colors, can mistakenly perceive objects as surface shapes or as a bizarrely connected ecosystem, such as the zebra pattern, which machine vision connects to a bizarre ecosystem that includes everything from zebras in the wild to objects in human culture (sofas, blankets, swimsuits, cowboy boots, pillows, flags, skirts, and more), revealing the general natural landscape that surrounds us.
Using generative neural networks, datasets, and computer vision as techniques for critical observation of the ecological crisis, the exhibition extends the tradition of fables that satirize humans through animals to fables of machines. And with Predictions Without a Future, it asks what kind of time we are creating.
