BOAN1942 | Minchae Kim Solo Exhibition 《A Scene from Hitchcock and Intervening Images》
The paintings of young artist Kim Minchae are painterly. In the context of picture=painting, saying that a painting is painterly may seem like an obvious homophone. However, the meaning of "painterly" in painting is not as simple as it seems.
Just as paintings have changed over time, societies, cultures, and artistic styles, so have the aesthetic forms and content included in the term "painterly". For example, consider The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1586) by El Greco, a transitional master of Renaissance and Baroque art. By elongating and distorting the faces and bodies of the characters, and painting only the crucial areas of the huge, gray-toned canvas in brilliant gold, the artist creates an elegant and powerful contrast between the ascension of Jesus and his earthly burial. The use of composition and color contrast is El Greco's greatest achievement.
However, such special techniques are not the only things that make a painting painterly. As we will see in Kim Minchae's 2023 series, "Hitchcockian Scenes and Disturbing Figures," artists painting here today are trying to establish their own pictorial qualities that resonate with current cultural tastes and visual styles as well as with sensibilities trained in art academia.
