Artside Gallery ㅣ Choi suin Solo Exhibition ≪He Gives Me Butterflies. Love, ≫
Artside Gallery will host the solo exhibition ≪He Gives Me Butterflies. Love, ≫ by Choi Suin (b.1987), from September 1st to October 7th, 2023. Through this exhibition, Choi Suin expresses the relationships and inner stories of humans in relation to nature. Drawing from her personal experiences, Choi contemplates relationships and portrays accompanying emotions as manifestations of nature. She evokes a blend of discomfort and sincerity, resonating with viewers through her personal experiences and empathetic emotions.
Choi Suin, who has stated “Fake exists in every moment,” aims to discuss even more intimate relationships through her new work. In particular, she portrays the subjects with an affectionate touch, shedding light on the falsehoods within loving relationships and revealing a sense of dissonance within them.
The waves depicted in the artwork <He Gives Me Butterflies>, which shares the same title as the exhibition, engage in an affectionate act of embracing each other. Amidst the center of the world, their relationship overflows with love, allowing us to infer their emotional distance. We confront both truth and exaggerated gestures, witnessing emotions being candidly exposed, as well as occasionally discovering movements veiled by falsehood. Within this context, the contrast between the sensual atmosphere and the distinctive bright colors with lively brushstrokes intensifies a dualistic sensation. Regarding this exhibition, she said, “It is a record of frequent relationships. It revolves around my least desirable self(situations). At the same time, it pertains to experiences and memories I yearn for the most recognition for.” With this, we can sense that her narratives about relationships, showcased thus far, have delved even deeper.
Everyone has various experiences when it comes to relationships. It is entirely natural for many people to project themselves onto the subjects in her paintings and think of third parties such as lovers, family, and friends. Choi Suin brings forth discomforting emotions that lay dormant within, expressing them as single scenes. Through her candid narratives captured on canvas, we can empathize with her situations, find solace, and sometimes gather the courage to face them head-on. This exhibition offers an opportunity to concentrate on the inner voice, to sense the unveiled falsehoods and concealed truths, and to contemplate the inescapable nature of relationships as we navigate through life.
